Wates was the big winner at the 2008 Building Sustainability Awards. The contractor won both the Sustainable Contractor of the Year and Sustainability Champion Awards

Rachel Wooliscroft was voted Sustainability Champion at the Hilton Park Lane, Central London for leading her company’s groundbreaking waste strategy, Target Zero. The firm has committed itself to eliminating non-hazardous waste from to landfill by 2010.

Eighty percent of rubbish was diverted from landfill last year.

Over 500 guests watched BBC journalist Chris Hollins present the Awards at the Hilton Park Lane in Central London.

Among the other prize winners were Hopkins Architects, housebuilder Crest Nicholson and consultant engineer Max Fordham. Pooran Desai, co-founder of Bioregional Quintain, picked up the sustainability leadership award.
