Jefferson Sheard Architects has unveiled this design for the entrance to Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, commonly known as the Waverley Steps.
The proposals give the station an enhanced presence on a narrow site with a sensitive heritage context. A line of steel “trees” runs along the centre of the site to avoid imposing upon adjacent buildings, including the grade A-listed Balmoral Hotel. The trees are surmounted by a glazed envelope that will provide an opportunity for creative lighting effects. Arup is structural and M&E engineer on the project; Turner & Townsend is the cost consultant.
