The government will have to choose between meeting green objectives and other aspirations, the chief executive of housebuilder Crest Nicholson told the EcoBuild conference.

Stephen Stone said it must make fighting climate change the most important thing and discard some secondary measures or miss its housing targets.

He said: “The government has a problem. We have increased room sizes, the Code for Sustainable Homes, energy requirements and, this week, Lifetime Homes standards. We have libraries and schools and all sorts of community goodies. But there is a limited pot of money. The government will have to make choices.”
