Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine has started construction work on the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, south-east London, which has lain vacant since the Millennium celebrations.
Renamed the O2 Arena, it is being developed by Anschutz Entertainment Group with design by architect HOK Sports and structural and services engineer Buro Happold. The dome is being converted into a 23,000-seat arena for music, entertainment and sports, including the 2012 Olympics if London wins its bid.
