McCarthy & Stone has received more than one takeover approach in recent weeks.

Housebuilder McCarthy & Stone has received more than one takeover approach.

The companies behind the approaches are as yet unnamed. And it is not yet known if the approaches will result in an offer for McCarthy & Stone.

Rumours of approaches have dominated the house building sector over the past couple of months, following Persimmon's take-over of Westbury.

McCarthy & Stone, which specialises in retirement homes, has predicted a 2006 forecast NAV of 463p to August 2006 and a 2007 NAV of 471p.

A spokesperson for McCarthy & Stone said acquisition of the company was an attractive prospect: The spokesperson said: "McCarthy & Stone does operate in an interesting market segment and demographics are excellent for this part of the market with an ageing and more affluent population."

"Furthermore, barriers to entry in retirement are higher than in regular homebuilding (planning and land requirements) and the business has very high market share of the fastest growing parts of the retirement housebuilding sector, namely, retirement accommodation - these are clearly factors which would make any acquisition attractive."
