Officer alleged to have collluded with foreign onstruction workers who violated work permits
An Indian man serving with one of Singapore's commercial auxiliary police forces has been charged with receiving bribes from foreign construction workers.
M Subramaniam, 42, promised not to arrest workers in Serangoon for violating their work permit conditions in return for money.
The foreign construction workers were moonlighting as car washers. Subramaniam allegedly also moonlighted as a car washer, after he obtained a licence to do so in 2003, without the permission of his employer.
Officers from the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said that Subramaniam had allegedly begun accepting bribes from an Indian construction worker who moonlighted as a car washer in May 2006. He did the same again in September last year with a different Indian construction worker.
Subramaniam was arrested on Wednesday and charged in a district court on Thursday.
He is out on $10,000 bail and will next appear in court on 20 November.
