Rebuild limited to three storeys on a smaller plot
Farrells has been appointed to design a new recreational club for the emergency services on one of Hong Kong harbour’s most prominent locations.
The club will include a wide variety of facilities including sports and recreation amenities, primarily for the police.
The Causeway Bay project, won by the architect’s Hong Kong office, is part of a multi-billion-dollar rail link running across the territory.
The club will sit above new cross-harbour tunnels whose construction necessitates the demolition of the existing club.
Farrell said one of the main challenges of the project is to provide all the facilities that the existing club has but on a significantly reduced area.
There are also strict height restrictions on the site limiting the new building to three storeys.
A number of significant trees are retained to become a focal point for a secluded courtyard to the rear of the building, overlooked by some of its bars and cafes.
Stefan Krummeck, director of TFP Farrells said: “Designing this new club in Hong Kong was an exciting challenge for our team, the site being so tightly hemmed in by transport infrastructure and height restrictions.
“The new building provides an experience which is wholly focused on the site’s greatest strengths: its waterside location and the spectacular views of Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon skyline.”
