New development after the original site was demolished to make way for Crossrail

A new theatre is to be developed at the former site of the historic Astoria venue in London, which was demolished to make way for Crossrail.

The proposed theatre will be the key part of a mixed-use scheme for Derwent London at One Oxford Street and will be part of the £2bn regeneration of the famous shopping street.

Paul Williams, executive director with Derwent, confirmed the development. He said: “Designs and content for the site are being drawn up and we expect to submit an application later this year.

“The development will comprise a new theatre as well as a mixture of office and retail units.”

Derwent purchased the Astoria in 2006 before the site became subject to a compulsory purchase order to accommodate the Crossrail works.
