One of the country's biggest housing associations could shed up to 100 staff

Housing association Places for People could slash up to a hundred jobs throughout the country as part of restructuring plans.

Places for People will now concentrate on the design and construction of projects such as hospital and schools, in addition to working in the housing sector. The association has a landbank for major mixed use developments that will include the building of 20,000 new homes.

A spokesperson said the decision to reduce staff was a strategic move planned for the past year and was not prompted by financial pressure. He added the cuts were necessary to cut costs as the association strives to become a large scale community builder.

Chief executive David Cowans said Places for People is set to replace its regional group structure with project teams to work on major developments.

Cowans said: “We are reshaping our business to enhance our skills in the exemplary design and construction of these new places, and in order to further build the capacity to deliver excellent customer service.”

The association has told 2,600 staff about the job cuts and set up a three month consultation on the changes.
