THE TUC is to use Wembley stadium and Heathrow Terminal 5, among other large projects, to benchmark the terms and conditions of Olympic contracts.
The union leaders are to ask construction unions to contribute to a document that will be presented to the Olympic Delivery Authority. Unions are to base their demands on measures adopted on a series of projects where steelworkers receive an incentives bonus.
A union source said the list would initially be aimed at securing a “memorandum of understanding” on pay, conditions and safety between unions, employers and the client. Agreement here would then form a stepping stone to a binding set of rules.
The source said: “If we can get a commitment to these standards from the ODA, it will be the starting point for a binding agreement.”
