Project and cost manager on job is T&T
The National Physical Laboratory is looking for a contractor to build a new lab building at the complex in west London.
Best known in the industry as one of several problem jobs which hobbled the then Laing Construction – forcing the Laing family to pull the plug on contracting – the work involves refurbishment and new build work at the Teddington site.
The job has been given a value of more than £5m with the project team including Turner & Townsend as both project and cost manager.
The NPL said: “The proposed project is to deliver the refurbishment and change of use works to [the] B47 [building] to facilitate the implementation of the new Van de Graaff accelerator. Modernise and enhance the performance of these facilities to provide the best possible conditions for the science and research to be completed.”
The work is being carried put in the wake of the government’s plans for a new series of nuclear reactors.

The NPL added the upgrade will “modernise and enhance the performance of these facilities to provide the best possible conditions for the science and research to be completed. This will be a new neutron measurement facility that will play a critical role in the safe and secure operation and continued development of the UK’s nuclear energy, defence and fusion research sectors.”
