Planning application to be submitted before Christmas
The most detailed images yet of what Olympicopolis in east London will look like have been revealed by Allies & Morrison, O’Donnell & Tuomey and Arquitecturia.
The architects are preparing a planning application for the Stratford Waterfront district for submission this December.
The 145,000sq m site next to Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre will be home to two residential towers of 30 or 40 storeys as well as a raft of cultural and educational institutions.
These include the V&A East, a 600-seat theatre for Sadler’s Wells and a new campus for UAL’s London College of Fashion. Talks are also continuing with the Smithsonian over what would be its first permanent museum outside the US.
In addition to the Stratford Waterfront site the wider Olympicopolis scheme includes a new campus for UCL south of the Orbit.
Allies & Morrison and Gold Medal winners O’Donnell & Tuomey are in a team with Josep Camps and Olga Felip of Arquitecturia, and Gustafson Porter, Buro Happold and Gardiner & Theobald. They beat five other star-studded teams featuring names such as 6a, David Chipperfield, Alison Brooks, Stanton Williams, Rick Mather, DRDH Architects, David Kohn and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.
The London Legacy Development Corporation will start preliminary market consultations to inform the approach to the construction works contracts in April 2016.
Building work on Stratford Waterfront is due to start in 2018 and be completed in 2020.
Who’s who at Stratford Waterfront
· Sadler’s Wells will open a new venue designed to serve contemporary dance-makers and its growing audiences, extending the range of work the dance house can commission, produce and tour. The space will include a 600-seat theatre, facilities for a choreographic school and a hip hop academy and flexible making spaces for research, development and production of dance work.
· UAL’s London College of Fashion plans to build on the college’s East End heritage, creating an east London fashion cluster through education, research and enterprise.
· The Victoria & Albert Museum will create V&A East, a new museum to showcase its world-class collections of design, art, architecture and performance. It will be a new kind of civic building weaving together spaces for collections, learning, contemporary design practice, conservation and research.
