St George submits planning application for the redevelopment of the former News International print works site in Wapping
Developer St George has submitted a planning application for the redevelopment of the former News International print works site in Wapping, east London.
The plans will transform the 15 acre London Dock site in Wapping into a mixed use and residential led development in the heart of London.
The proposed development, designed by Patel Taylor, aims to break up the barriers posed by the former Fortress Wapping with a masterplan with permeable routes through the site and varied landscapes inspired by the heritage of the historic London Dock in Wapping.
The proposals include up to 1,800 new homes, over 20,000m2 of commercial space, as well as a site for a new six form entry secondary school with a sixth form.
The plans also includes a new civic square at the main entrance to the site - comparable in size to Granary Square, Kings Cross - which will host different events throughout the year
The Grade-II listed Pennington Street Warehouse will be at the heart of the development and will be bought back to life with a mix of interesting and eclectic uses such as cafes, restaurants and small offices.
The application is expected to be determined later this year, with the first phase of development commencing in 2014.
The entire development is expected to take up to 15 years to complete.
