New supermarket with commercial and residential space to kick off White Hart Lane project
McLaren Construction has been appointed main contractor for the first phase of Tottenham Hotspur FC’s new stadium scheme, the club has announced.
Spurs said the firm would this month start work on a new 130,000 ft2 branch of Sainsbury’s supermarket to the north of the site of the proposed new stadium.
The news follows McLaren’s successful completion of the club’s new training centre in nearby Enfield.
Spurs said the new store would be one of the largest of its kind in London, and would have commercial and educational space above.
It added that the supermarket would create up to 250 jobs and secure jobs from Sainsbury’s existing store near White Hart Lane.
Project director Paul Phillips said McLaren had proved itself to be a good partner during the construction of the training centre.
“By appointing McLaren, we shall again be able to ensure that the new supermarket development is delivered in line with a strict contractor code of conduct similar to that which was employed in Enfield, and that our construction partners will take a responsible and sensitive approach to building within our community,” he said.
McLaren Group chairman Kevin Taylor said securing the contract was “testament” to its strong relationship with Spurs.
The new Sainsbury’s store is scheduled to open in “late 2013 or early 2014”.
