Fire Design Solutions has developed a sprinkler system suitable for open-plan apartments
The FDS AS01 allows the flats to be designed without a protected entrance hall, internal fire doors, fire-resistant walls or fire collars, the company claims.
The system runs off the building’s mains cold water supply, doing away with the need for a dedicated sprinkler tank, pumps or pipework.
The boosted water main is taken up to the door of each apartment as it usually would be but, rather than going straight to the domestic water unit, it first passes through a sprinkler box
located above the entrance door or inside a cupboard.
The box is linked to the sprinkler main, which provides distribution to the sprinkler heads. The traditional smoke detector in the entrance hall and heat detector in the kitchen are replaced by FDS latching units that control the sprinkler box.
