Consultant lands three roles at £500m scheme to create 2.6 million ft2 urban district
Mace has won three roles on the £500m Wellington Place scheme, which client MEPC is planning as a business district in Leeds’ city centre.
Mace has been appointed project manager, construction manager and CDM co-ordinator on the 2.6 million ft2 scheme. The role of CDM co-ordinator is in line with regulations that came into force in April.
Wellington Place will be made up of 13 medium-to-high-rise buildings that will include offices, up to 800 apartments and leisure and public realm spaces.
The project also incorporates infrastructure works, including a 1,700-space basement car park.
Initial infrastructure works are expected to start by the end of this year, and the programme will be delivered in phases with final completion due in 2017.
The scheme, in the west end of Leeds, has been masterplanned by architect Carey Jones with help from Fielden Clegg Bradley and Martha Schwartz.
Plans include an urban beach that would transform the muddy banks of the Aire into a sandy area with volleyball courts and seating, modelled on the Seine in Paris.
Chris Davidson, development manager at MEPC described Wellington Place as “a unique opportunity for Leeds to create a new business, leisure and residential quarter for the city”.
MEPC, which is owned by pension fund manager Hermes, is an owner, manager and developer of business communities in the UK, including six business parks outside large towns and two in city centres. Together they are valued at £1.1bn.
Mace has worked for MEPC before on Chineham Park in Basingstoke, Hampshire, Granta Park in Cambridge and Milton Park in Oxford.
• ISG has been appointed by Standard Life Investments on a £13m project to refurbish Savannah House offices on Charles II Street in London. Internally ISG will carry out structural work to increase floor space, and an entrance will be created to make room for retail space. Externally, curtain walling will be installed.
