Initiative aims to improve health by delivering better housing in London borough of Brent
The Architecture for Health in Vulnerable Environments Institute has today - World TB day - launched an initiative to highlight the link between tuberculosis and poor housing conditions.
The Happy Healthy Housing initiative targets problems that surround poor housing conditions and tuberculosis in the London borough of Brent. In 2008 there were 8,655 tuberculosis cases reported in the UK with 39% in London. Brent has one of the highest rates in the capital.
According to the ARCHIVE Institute tuberculosis transmission is increased in poorly ventilated and crowded spaces.
The institute's goal is to improve health outcomes by delivering better housing conditions and the project aims to raise awareness among vulnerable communities about how overcrowding, insufficient ventilation and dampness all contribute to annual rises in tuberculosis levels.
