Scheme in Cambridge is due to complete in late 2018
Architecture practice NBBJ has revealed its designs for a new headquarters for life-sciences research-tool firm Abcam in Cambridge.
The facility will provide 9,300 sq m of laboratory and office space at Cambridge Biomedical Campus’ global healthcare village, allowing Abcam to bring its three existing facilities – and 450 staff – together on a single site.
The structure, due to complete in 2018, is the first to be built as part of second phase of the campus’ development, masterminded by Liberty Property Trust and Countryside Properties.
The exterior of the building is characterised by distinctive gold vertical and horizontal brise soleil that reference the specialist research taking place within its walls, while expansive use of glazing allows views out to the surrounding countryside and presents a “science on show” message.
NBBJ partner David Lewis said the building’s design reflected “the groundbreaking research and innovation taking place” at the firm.
