Arup Associates has a long history in designing successful sports venues both in the UK and overseas. Its most recent work is in the Caribbean, including the redevelopment of the Kensington Oval in Barbados for the cricket World Cup last summer, and a new national stadium for the St Vincent & the Grenadines, now in detailed design.
The judges said “Kensington Oval has become a modern icon which has brought much needed regeneration to this part of Bridgetown.” They felt the architect had addressed the ground’s legacy, which will see it remodelled and become a resort facility, creating an echo of the Barbados coastal landscape.
Also shortlisted: Building Design Partnership, David Morley Architects and HOK Sport Architecture.
