The driver was reportedly trapped in his cab for seven hours after the crane collapsed at the Altitude 25 development in Croydon, south London. Three other colleagues were trapped in the wreckage, but were not seriously injured. The crane was attempting to lift a large steel girder at the time of the accident.

A section of the crane collapsed onto the roof of the neighbouring Croydon Park Hotel, and guests were temporarily evacuated. The driver was taken to hospital, where police say he is in a stable but serious condition.

The crane was a Select Plant tower crane, which is a subsidiary of Laing O'Rourke.
