Kier has been picked to built Chester’s Bennetts Associates-designed cultural centre
Kier will build the Bennetts Associates-designed scheme, which will see the Grade II-listed cinema redeveloped into a library, cinema and theatre complex.
Kier will begin work February 2015, employing 250 people at any one time and 1,500 throughout the contract period.
The company is aiming for 70% local labour and subcontractors, and 75% local materials suppliers. There will also be over 15 building trade apprenticeships and 38 weeks of training opportunities for local schools.
Bennett Associates produced a concept design for the project last year. The architect will now be undertaking detailed design work.
Councillor Stuart Parker, Executive Member for Culture and Economy, said: “Chester’s cultural offer is essential to the future economy of the city and every £1 spent in that direction produces a return of six times that amount.”
Gary Wintersgill, managing director of Kier Construction’s Northern Division, said: “We are delighted to be part of the team selected to deliver what will be an outstanding new cultural facility for Chester and the wider community.”
