Sir Robert McAlpine construction manager picks up gong for work on Newcastle cancer lab.

John Roper, construction manager at Sir Robert McAlpine, has won the Construction Manager of the Year Award.

Roper won for his work leading the team to build the Paul O’Gorman cancer research laboratory in Newcastle.

The building forms part of the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University.

Chris Blythe, chief executive at the Chartered Institute of Building, said: “Winning a medal, and in particular being named as the overall Construction Manager of the Year, is a major achievement. John now joins the industry’s elite.”

Roper was one of 120 UK construction managers who went for the award, which was presented at London’s Grovesnor House Hotel on 25 October 2005.
