Millions of pounds worth of construction equipment bound for the Middle East is on board the stricken car transporter Hoegh Osaka, it has emerged.

The huge vessel was deliberately grounded in the Solent on Saturday night when the vessel began to list shortly after leaving Southampton.

A JCB spokesman said 50-tonne and 33-tonne tracked excavators were among the plant on board, which was destined for dealers in the Middle East.

“We are awaiting further information from the shipping carrier about the current status of the machines and any plans they may have for retrieval,” he said.

Other plant items onboard include backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers, Teletruk forklifts and wheeled loading shovels.

The Hoegh Osaka was also carrying around 1400 cars, among them some 1,200 manufactured by Jaguar Land Rover.
