Strategic Sites revised scheme includes new college building, offices and homes plus canal upgrade and public square
Kirklees Council has approved revised plans for a £175m mixed-use canalside redevelopment in the centre of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
Strategic Sites will develop the Waterfront Quarter Project on a 2.4ha site at the edge of the town centre, following the granting of planning permission on Thursday.
The scheme will now include a 28,000m2 building for Kirklees College, as well as 17,700m2 of office space, 300 homes, and leisure facilities such as bars, with a new public square. It will also involve work to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which runs through the site.
The developers have worked with Kirklees Council and development agency Yorkshire Forward on the regeneration project, which is scheduled for completion in 2012. Main architect on the scheme is DLG Architects.
Paul Barber, chief executive of Strategic Sites, said: “The scheme will revitalise an important part of Huddersfied town centre and become a vibrant community in which people will come to live, work, learn and play.”
Melanie Brooke, vice-principal at Kirklees College, said: “This is a significant step towards giving the people of Kirklees an outstanding place to work and learn. We are delighted that work can soon begin on a new campus and our vision for an even better college can finally start to become a reality."
Construction work of the first phase is scheduled to start within the next few months. This will include the college building and up to 8,000m2 of grade A offices.
Strategic Sites is a joint venture between Helios Properties, Kilmartin Property Group and JC Musgrave. The company is headed by Paul Barber, a former director of English Partnerships.
