Salary details released by the Cabinet Office show that housing mandarin Richard McCarthy earns up to £180,000 a year.

The names of 170 civil servants earning over £150,000 were revealed this week, as part of David Cameron’s drive to make government more transparent. Among the disclosures was the salary of McCarthy, director general of housing and planning in the communities department, who earns between £175,000 and £179,999.

Other figures included:

  • John McCready, managing director of property in the business and innovation department, who earns between £150,000 and £154,999
  • Nirmal Kotecha, major projects director for the Highways Agency in the Department for Transport, who earns between £150,000 and £154,999.

A Public Sector Transparency Board has been set up to make more civil service salaries known to the public.
