Laing O’Rourke, Balfour Beatty and Severfield among list whittled down from 121 applications
Sites proposed by Laing O’Rourke, Balfour Beatty and Severfield are in the running as potential off-site logistics hubs for the £16bn expansion programme at Heathrow Airport.
The 65-long list of sites have been chosen from 121 applications published in September and once finalised, the final four selected locations will pre-assemble components of the expanded airport before transporting them in consolidated loads to Heathrow. It initally invited bids to support the construction of the planned third runway in April.
Heathrow said this expansion is the first major infrastructure project in the UK to pioneer the large-scale use of logistics hubs.
It added these hubs will reduce emissions through transporting the assembled components to site in few lorries, delivering expansion faster, more affordably and minimising impact on local communities.
Research by WPI Economics earlier this year revealed that integrating an off-site manufacturing supply chain into a major project has the potential to reduce the overall cost of the project by as much as 25% whilst speeding up delivery by up to 30%.
Heathrow chairman Lord Deighton said: “As the UK leaves the EU, Heathrow is an essential infrastructure project that will ensure Britain remains an open trading nation.
“Our aim, to harness the skills we need through long-term projects such as the Logistics Hubs and Business Summits, will drive jobs and investment leaving a legacy of increased productivity for the construction sector.
“The third runway is not a London centric project – it is one we are opening up to the whole of the UK, asking for its skills and expertise to help build an asset this country so desperately needs to safeguard its future prosperity.”
