206-flat West End development will include 22,500ft2 of mixed-use space
Grid Architects has won planning approval for a large mixed-use scheme on the Strand, which will see the removal of a West End street.
Maltravers Street will make way for the 206-home development by Mourant Property Trustees development.
The scheme will feature 22,500ft2 of retail, restaurant, leisure and business space.
Berkeley Homes is the development manager on the scheme, which will comprise housing blocks, two courtyards and a linking colonnade.
The sensitive site is next door to Grade I-listed St Clement Danes church and opposite the Courts of Justice.
The development will be to Code for Sustainable Homes level 3 and will feature green and brown roofs.
Craig Casci, director of GRID Architects said: “The project definitely provided us with a good challenge as it’s surrounded by a complex context, listed buildings and townscape demands from 8m street widths as well as strategic views across the Thames. We’ve aimed to create an architecture that has the gravity of this civic site yet is still domestic.”
