Government adviser says pipeline may be extended beyond three years and suggests smaller projects might have a part to play

Chief construction adviser Paul Morrell says the government is looking at whether to expand its £50bn pipeline of government construction work beyond the three years currently detailed.

Morrell, speaking to Building after a revised pipeline of work was published last week, said the government was also looking to see if smaller projects could be included in the table of future government construction jobs.

He said: “We are currently considering how we might identify potential projects beyond this [three-year] Spending Review period.

“We will also continue to drill down to reach departments with smaller programmes and projects, as we know this is important to SMEs;
and to work with industry to see how it might be served by increased granularity in the published information.”

Morrell’s comments follow the launch of plans to support the growth of UK tunnelling skills and a revised public building work pipeline last week, which added projected work from all government departments, rather than the seven departments originally included.

Morrell said the government was unable to force local authorities to put their project information into the pipeline, but that it was
hoping to “persuade them” it was in their interests to do so.
