The government is preparing tougher targets for the quality and quantity of housing in the Thames Gateway.
The interim Thames Gateway Strategic Framework, leaked to Building, says the number of homes built in the area by 2015 should be increased to 160,000. The Sustainable Communities Plan, released in 2003, referred to 120,000 homes.
The strategy is due to be launched next month, and the aim is that by 2015 all schemes in the Gateway will be rated as either “good” or “very good” by Cabe.
The leak coincided with housing minister Yvette Cooper’s call to housebuilders and councils from high growth areas to devise ways of improving housing delivery.
