Airport operator BAA has selected four consultants to join the project team for its redevelopment of Stansted airport, known as Stansted Generation 2.

Structural engineer Whitbybird has been selected with TPS Consult for pavement and infrastructure design, Turner & Townsend as cost consultant and WSP Group for building services. The move follows the spring appointment of Grimshaw as the architect for the scheme.

The companies appointed will work with the Stansted Generation 2 project team to develop a design for a second runway at the site.

All the companies have framework agreements with BAA. Mark Shirburne-Davies, BAA design director, said: “Our consultant agreements have enabled us to appoint consultants from a world-class pool of talent.”

He added: “The Stansted Generation 2 project is the most significant development opportunity for our business since the commencement of Terminal 5 at Heathrow. ”

The Stansted Generation 2 project was launched in December 2003. A formal planning application is expected to be submitted during 2006.
