Disaster as 4km metal cantilever falls during construction of the Indian capital's new metro system
Five workers were killed yesterday when a section of the New Delhi metro system that was under construction collapsed. A further 13 people were injured.
The accident occurred as a 2.5-mile (4km) metal cantilever was being raised to attach to concrete girders.
It is a huge setback for the project, which started on schedule seven years ago - an unusual occurrence in India. The whole system was intended to open before the start of the Commonwealth Games next year.
The metro, three lines of which are already completed, has made a large difference to the lives of city dwellers, who previously relied on highly polluting buses, rickshaws or their own motorcycles to get around.
