Firms appointed to £100m Battersea restoration

A clutch of consultants have been appointed to a £100m package of repair works on London’s iconic Battersea Power Station, with work set to start in October.

Architect Wilkinson Eyre, engineers Buro Happold and Purcell, cost consultant Gardiner & Theobald and project manager Turner & Townsend have all been appointed.

The works mark the start of phase two of the overall development, which will see the Grade II* listed Power Station ultimately transformed into a mixed-use development.

Phase two is divided into two stages: the £100m external repair of the power station, taking 18 months; and a £600m mixed-use interior due to be contracted during those 18 months.

The long-awaited restoration of the power station will begin 30 years after power was turned off there.

This first phase of the works involves repairs to the external brickwork, wash towers, the steel frame, windows and the replacement of the four chimneys, which will be reconstructed.

The restoration of the Power Station building and chimneys is expected to complete in 2016.

Carillion was confirmed as preferred bidder for the £400m first phase last week – 866 apartments to be built to the west of the power station.
