Ministry of labour to look into BBC accusations of inhumane living conditions for site workers
The ministry of labour in Dubai is investigating claims that workers on Dubai construction projects are being forced to live in inhumane condition.
The move comes after a BBC investigation found a lack of clean water and raw sewage flowing through one camp which housed 7,500 labourers in 1,248 rooms. The ministry is now looking into the “veracity” of these claims, according to UAE newspaper the National.
The newspaper said Maher al Obaid, the acting director general of the inspection team taskforce would visit the sites and investigate the “alleged derogation of the rights of workers in the construction sector”. He said that the ministry regularly carried out inspections and imposed fines. A press conference on health and safety practices on construction and camp sites is also due to be held today.
