Costain has won a £48m contract in joint venture to upgrade the power supply to the West Coast Mainline for Network Rail.

Costain will work with joint venture partners Alstom and Babcock under the name ABC Electrification on the project.

The power upgrade is part of Network Rail’s £9.4bn investment in electrifying British railways.

The works in the North-west of England will support more frequent services and longer trains which are planned for the line.

Work will commence in early 2013 and is expected to complete in 2016.

Andrew Wyllie, chief executive of Costain, said: “The award of this contract provides further demonstration of Costain’s position as a major player in the rail sector, delivering integrated services for complex and large scale infrastructure projects which are vital to the UK economy.”
