University extension in Al Ain and new Ikea store on Yas island are latest big wins for Al Futtaim Carillion
Contractor Carillion has won two contracts in Abu Dhabi worth around £110 million, it announced today.
The contracts, for a University extension in the city of Al Ain and a new Ikea store at Yas Island, are in addition to the £570m contract it won at the start of the month to build the New York University project in the emirate.
Carillion’s middle east subsidiary, Al Futtaim Carillion, was appointed by Mubadala Infrastructure, part of the Mubadala Development Company, to build Stage 3 of the new UAE University project for £80m.
This will see it provide academic buildings, recreational facilities and residential accommodation in addition to the phased demolition of existing buildings, in order to help the UAE University to consolidate onto a single site. Construction is to start in May 2010 and complete in the second quarter of 2011.
Al Futtaim Carillion has been awarded the £30 million IKEA contract by Aldar. Construction will be completed by the end of the year.
Carillion chief executive, John McDonough, said: "The new UAE University is one of Abu Dhabi's most prestigious developments and we look forward to working in partnership with Mubadala to deliver a campus that will provide outstanding learning, living and leisure facilities for students. The new IKEA development further reinforces the strong market position we have established in Abu Dhabi."
