Capita project manages £12.7m leisure centre

Consultant Capira Symonds has provided QS, project management, architecture and structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services on the external work of the £12.7m Darwen Leisure Centre in Lancashire.

The centre features state-of-the-art sport and leisure facilities including an 25m swimming pool; a small pool; a main gym with eighty pieces of equipment; a multi-purpose fitness studio; a multi-use sports hall, and a training suite.

The project comprised the demolition of the existing building and full design and construction of the new Centre.

The project’s key challenges included the demolition of the existing structure within a Conservation Area and a change in political power during the design stage which led to a redesign incorporating the various aspirations of new elected members, including a sports hall extension.
