Consultant’s heritage management team has secured two new contracts in Yorkshire and Cumbria

Capita Symonds has been appointed as consultants to assess the viability of various options for the future management of Mealbank Quarry in to Ingleton, a small community in rural North Yorkshire.

The former 19th century industrial site contains the remains of a Hoffmann kiln, associated spoil heaps, and standing remains of lime extraction and production. Since its closure and abandonment in 1910 the site has been largely left to nature with a few low key uses on part of the site.

The Capita’s heritage management team will address conservation of the monument, public access, and ecological and environmental requirements including the provision of solutions and options that will inform future management.

Capita has additionally been appointed as consultant for Whitley Castle Roman fort. The heritage team will create specifications and schemes of work in consultation with Natural England, the land owner, English Heritage and the North Pennines AONB to improve the public access to the site whilst protecting the monument and allowing farming practices to continue.

Lying to the north of the market town of Alston in Cumbria, Whitley Castle is one of the best preserved Roman forts in Northern England.
