The ruling that Cleveland Bridge UK must pay Brookfield Construction £4.2m after its legal battle over Wembley stadium has been partly overturned

Last week, the Court of Appeal reduced the judgment to £1.8m, meaning that with interest taken into account, Brookfield (formerly Multiplex Construction UK) would be forced to return £3m – 49% – of the original award. The judge said this was because the basis for the initial calculation had been incorrect.

In 2008, Multiplex, the main contractor for Wembley stadium, launched litigation against Cleveland Bridge, which had agreed a £60m subcontract for steelwork, including the stadium arch. It claimed there were errors in the design and fabrication of steelwork for the project.
