New standard will cover continental shopping centres
BRE Global has launched the first pan-European sustainability standard for shopping centres.
The standard, supported by the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) is being tested in two large-scale shopping developments in Germany and Turkey. The outcome of the projects will be incorporated into the standards next year. The competition between the US' LEED and BREEAM continues to hot up.
ICSC European chair, Jaap Gillis, said BREEAM won out because of its adaptability to local markets
“Developers are increasingly working across European boundaries and they want a common methodology that they can roll out across their operations.”
BREEAM director, Martin Townsend welcomed the data-gathering opportunity:
“BREEAM’s coverage is being extended throughout Europe. The pilots will give us invaluable data to ensure that we have a very robust methodology that is flexible and can be adapted to a truly pan-European application.”
ICSC and the BRE are looking for other assessment projects. Interested parties should contact a licensed BREEAM assessor.
