Student halls built by GB Building awarded 95.05% score
A student accommodation complex in Bradford has been awarded the highest ever BREEAM rating in the world, with a score of 95.05%.
The £30m scheme, built by GB Building Solutions and designed by GWP Architecture, is one of only 15 BREEAM “outstanding” buildings in the world.
GB Building achieved the marque by using locally sourced materials and some pre-fabricated building components.
The BREEAM rating system is one of the world’s leading standards for measuring the sustainability credentials of buildings.
The student complex – named The Green – contains 1,026 bedrooms across six and seven storey apartments and four storey townhouses, which were built using pre-fabricated timber wall frames.
Other features include a ‘biodiversity pool’ which reuses rainwater and solar thermal collectors to provide heat.
Martin Smout, chairman and chief executive of GB Building Solutions, said: “While everyone involved in the student village had experience of working on environmentally sustainable buildings prior to this one, The Green reached new levels, where every aspect of the design and build was maximised to have minimum impact on the environment both during construction and during the life of the building.”
The project team also included Robinsons Consulting, Jackson Coulson Partnership and Spring and Co. The client was Listerhills Ltd - a joint venture between Hayaat Group and Welbeck Land.
