Capita project manages and designs £3.2m Pont Calzaghe Bridge as part of Newbridge's regeneration
Pont Calzaghe Bridge has been officially opened by Newbridge's unbeaten world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe (pictured) and his award-winning trainer father Enzo.
Capita Symonds, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s joint venture partner, was designer and project manager on the £3.2m scheme that plays a key role in the region’s regeneration.
The bridge comprises of two connected footway/cycleway bridges - one spanning the Ebbw Valley Railway and the other the River Ebbw.
It aims to re-establish the town centre as a focus of economic and social activity while broadening the town’s socio-economic and cultural base.
The bridge provides an important link for pedestrians and cyclists, including full disabled access, between Newbridge Town Centre, Newbridge Comprehensive School, the nearby leisure centre and the new local Ebbw Valley railway station.
The scheme’s main contractor was Alun Griffiths while Rowecord was the fabricator and erector.
The project has been funded through Welsh Assembly Government transport grants.
