Planning approval is granted to triple size of New Street concourse
A start on site at Birmingham New Street station is one step closer as the project received planning permission today.
Birmingham council’s planning committee gave the £600m project – which will triple the size of the concourse - the green light and Network Rail expects main works to start on site later in the year.
Phase I of the project will see the new concourse built on the current car park. This concourse is expected to open in 2012. Phase 2 will then see the existing concourse closed for redevelopment. The project is expected to complete in 2015.
Mike Whitby, leader of Birmingham council, said: “Delivering a world-class station to the city will enhance our international reputation and investment potential while also drastically improving services nationally and regionally.”
