Development to add 80% extra space to current shopping centre
Architect Benoy’s masterplan for a £200m redevelopment of Telford town centre has been submitted for planning permission.
The development by Sovereign Land will add 400,000sq ft of retail and 250,000sq ft of restaurant, bars, cinema and hotel space to the 1m sqft shopping centre at the heart of the town.
The masterplan, submitted to Telford and Wrekin council, seeks to bring enhanced integration of the town centre with the rest of the town; add more pedestrian access and build new public squares.
Work on the scheme is set to start in spring 2014.
Tim Binnington, chair of Sovereign Land said that plans would “transform Telford into a regional retail and leisure destination”.
He added: “Over the years, the town centre has evolved piecemeal and parts of it are showing their age. We now want to take the town forward to the next stage with a considered, planned regeneration strategy.”
GL Hearn is acting as planning consultant on the scheme.
