Architect plans to convert grade-II listed north London building
Bennetts Associates has unveiled designs for the conversion of a grade-II north London town hall into a theatre.
The building in Hornsey in the London borough of Haringey will be home to a new drama school for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.
Bennetts Associates, the architecture practice behind the highly-acclaimed overhaul of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, will restore the thirties’ art deco building, which was originally designed by New Zealand architect Reginald Uren.
Rab Bennetts, director at Bennetts Associates, said: “Reworking existing buildings has turned out to be a particularly rich seam in Bennetts Associates’ work and the synergy between Mountview and the spaces within Hornsey Town Hall is inescapable.
Adapting a listed building through architectural inventiveness and improvisation greatly enhances the nature of performance and we are delighted to be involved.”
