Architect designs “light-box” facade for iconic building
Architect BDP has unveiled its plans for regeneration of Oldham’s historic Town Hall.
The grade II-listed building was built in 1894 but has been closed since the mid 1990s. The new plans incorporate a cinema, cafes and retail spaces.
The glass side extension has been designed to provide an atrium where people can move between levels on the sloping site. The ‘light box’ would also light up at night to enliven the city centre.
Jim McMahon, Oldham council leader, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to bring a fantastic building back into use and create a venue for the borough that is very different to other out-of-town cinema developments – something we can all be proud of.”
