Contractor benefits from retailer’s plans for expansion
Barr has won contracts worth £35m to build supermarkets for Sainsbury’s as the retailer expands its presence in Scotland.
The deal will involve building two new stories, managing the extension of two stores and converting a further store. Barr, a regular partner for Sainsbury’s, will also be responsible for the construction of all Sainsbury’s convenience stores throughout Scotland.
Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr, said: “These contracts represent a significant amount of work for our retail division and they have helped to strengthen our order book. Our retail division is going from strength-to-strength, despite the current downturn within the construction industry.”
Work will begin in summer 2010 with the building of a new store in Hawick.
