Firm will use only scaffolding contractors that are accredited NASC members to reduce site risks

Bam Construct UK has announced it is to use only scaffolding contractors that are members of the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC).

The announcement follows new statistics published by the Health and Safety Executive last week that showed construction has the largest number of fatal injuries among main industry sectors, and overall 23 of those deaths were caused by falls from height.

The UK firm has written to scaffolding contractors informing them that their membership of the NASC represents best practice.

The change in policy will be a gradual process to allow non-members to align themselves and join the NASC. Frank Garnett, director of health and safety at Bam, said that the goal was to create an “incident-free workplace”.

Operatives of NASC member companies are estimated to account for over 50% of the qualified scaffolding workforce.

Last year, Bam introduced a compulsory hand protection policy on all its sites, reducing hand-related accidents by 32%.
