The American subsidiaries of contractor Balfour Beatty have won £550m of contracts.
Heery International, will design a prison in Berlin, New Hampshire, with a capacity for 1,200 inmates. The project is a design-and-build contract and will include housing, education and health facilities. The project is expected to take three years to build.
Balfour Beatty Construction, formerly Centex Construction, has won two contracts worth £100m from the US army including a scheme at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, for 675 homes and a 158-unit scheme at the military academy at West Point, New York.
Other contracts include the £90m Pueblo of Pojoaque resort and casino, north of Santa Fe in New Mexico, the £54m Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Nashville, Tennessee, and the £70m, 33-storey Atlantic Centre building in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This is the city’s first hurricane-resistant building, comprising offices, retail units and a restaurant.
