British Urban Regeneration Association calls Atomikarchitecture's design most realistic concept
Architect Atomikarchitecture’s Atomik Pier has been named the most realistic and sustainable design concept for a generic pier by the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA).
The design won the “professional” category at BURA's 21st Century Pier competition.
The judges said the design represents flexible use of space while still having a very strong and exciting identity of its own.
The firm’s Mike Oades worked with architect Christine Heil and environmental consultants XCO2 to create the pier designed to be a focal point of coastal regeneration initiatives.
The generic pier can be adapted to suit any seaside town location, orientation and local needs.
It offers visitors a destination point in addition to providing a centre for economic activities to enhance the local town and the community it is linked with.
The pier makes full use of its environment by the way it orients itself for the comfort of the visitor whilst maximising its own sustainability through the generation of heat, power and passive heating and cooling.
This competition has generated ideas on how to make piers sustainable both environmentally and economically, as well as how they could successfully contribute to the renewal and regeneration of Britain’s coastal towns.
