Firm will design new marine stops on 3km-long canal
Atkins has won a design competition for new marine transport stations along the recently created Dubai canal for the Dubai Road and Transport Authority.
A large translucent canopy over each station incorporates photovoltaic panels to generate solar power to run the stations’ lights.
Opened in November last year, the Dubai canal is 3km long and features a shopping centre, hotels, restaurants, housing, walkways and cycle paths.
Adrian Lindon, Atkins’ director of architecture, said: “We are now looking at the possibility of 3D printing some of the station structure modules. The Dubai 3D Printing Strategy is particularly relevant to the construction sector, with a target to 3D-print a quarter of buildings in Dubai by 2030.”
